Hidden Wine Treasures of Konavle
As winegrowing has always been a fundamental part of Konavle’s agrarian economy so we have chosen Ćilipi to taste the famous wines made at the Miljas winery.
The fertile green Konavle Valley, connecting Gornja Banda and Donja Banda, is covered with vineyards and orchards with many plantations renewing the cultivation of this historically valuable varietal in the vineyards of Konavle.
Even back in the times of the Dubrovnik Republic, great attention was dedicated to the autochthonous variety of Malvasia – which is very strange – because if you have visited northern peninsulla Istria – then you understand. Malvasia is tipical Istrian wine… But – is it really?
After a picturesque drive through the countryside, we’ll arrive at the village of Mihanići for a visit to the local vineyard and winery owned by the Miljas Family. Very much off the beaten path, the vineyard is nestled in a little vale among a densely forested area. Here, in sharp contrast to the rugged rocky outcrops that dominate this part of the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, Miljas grows two hectares of exceptional grapes. A unique opportunity awaits us here to taste some of the finest wines from this region and meet the vintner himself Zvonko Miljas.
The Miljas vineyard dates back from 1876. And it’s well-respected for high quality white and red. Listening to Zvonko talk about his wines and wine producing in this area of Croatia is a real pleasure.
Like most wineries, Miljas uses other grapes from the Konavle region to meet his 50,000 liter a year production.
Our leisurely tour ends in a local tavern where you will be treated like family enjoying some of the areas best traditional dishes!
Please note: This tour consists of moderate walking activities and is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
The cost includes: pick up at the hotel (villa or private apartment) by our English-speaking driver, comfortable sedan car of van, road tolls and parking, all taxes and VAT, tickets if applicable, lunch at the authentic tavern Konoba Konavle, wine included, wine tasting at Miljas.
